Khloé Kardashian Odom Hits Amsterdam, Shows Off Lighter Locks

"The only way to tell people that Black Pete is a racist caricature is to educate them about it," Roelof-Jan Minneboo, one of the organisers, told AFP, adding that there were demonstrations being staged at various spots in the city. At its famous Dam Square, around 75 demonstrators, many wearing anti-Black Pete T-shirts, turned their backs in silent protest as Saint Nick and his helpers passed by. The invention of a Dutch school teacher, Black Pete has since 1850 been loyally at the side of Saint Nicholas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus or Father Christmas. Saint Nicholas and his helpers traditionally "arrive" with a gift-filled boat from Spain on the third weekend of November. Three weeks later, on December 5, the Dutch give each other gifts said to have been distributed by Saint Nicholas -- a Turkish bishop wearing a long red gown and mitre -- and Black Pete. Dressed in a gaudy medieval costume, with a blackened face, red lips and an afro wig, Pete is seen by many ordinary Dutch as a harmless prankster cheering up a children's festival.

No big surprise there, I guess. Not only is he a Times stalwart who knows whats fit to print and what isnt; by books end its clear that hes won a prime spot on the lap of the Dutch elite that hes not about to risk losing. His acknowledgments pages are a glittering catalogue of that elite, up to and including their Royal Highnesses Willem-Alexander and Maxima, whom he thanks for the courtesies they have extended me at various points over the past eight years. Ugh. Willem-Alexander, of course, is the recently crowned king of the Netherlands the man who, back in 2007, publicly (and quite improperly) chided Geert Wilders, an elected Member of Parliament, by saying: Speech is silver, silence is golden. Jerk. Oh, well. There are two basic choices for a writer in Shortos position: you can be a truth-teller, or you can be a courtier. Hes made his choice and, it appears, is reaping the rewards.

The singer was seen spending some time off in the Dutch capital, where she was snapped strolling the http://iizhamyl08.livejournal.com/7170.html streets and enjoying some shopping in the city's famous De Jordaan neighborhood on Friday, Nov. 15. Fresh off her performance at the MTV European Music Awards last weekend and in the midst of promoting her hit album Prism, the "Roar" singer tried to stay out of the spotlight and attempted to go incognito with her low-key attire, dressing down in a charcoal jacket, jeans, converse sneakers and trendy black glasses.
